Utrecht, Nederland, 14 juni 2011. Cristal Delivery B.V. is een recent opgericht farmaceutisch bedrijf dat een duidelijke meerwaarde creëert voor patiënten met momenteel onderbehandelde aandoeningen. Cristal Delivery heeft zogenaamde nanomedicijnen ontwikkeld, waarbij het geneesmiddel na toediening op een langzame en gecontroleerde manier afgegeven wordt. Op deze manier zijn geneesmiddelen werkzamer, veiliger en ook gemakkelijker in gebruik. Cristal Delivery ontwikkelt een eigen productportfolio van nanomedicijnen door haar innovatieve nanotechnologie te combineren met bestaande of nieuwe geneesmiddelen, voor huidige of andere indicaties. De nanotechnologie biedt farmaceutische bedrijven ook de mogelijkheid de patentpositie van hun geneesmiddelen door significante verbetering van het therapeutische profiel te beschermen.

Het nieuwe bedrijf is opgericht door Dr. Cristianne Rijcken (Chief Executive Officer) en Dr. Joost Holthuis (oprichter en voormalige CEO van OctoPlus N.V.) en is gevestigd in Utrecht. Cristal Delivery is een spin-off van de afdeling Biofarmacie & Farmaceutische Technologie van de Universiteit Utrecht. De technologie is gebaseerd op het onderzoekswerk van Prof. Dr. Ir. Wim Hennink en het promotieonderzoek van Cristianne Rijcken. Cristal Delivery wordt gefinancierd door haar oprichters, een private investeerder en de Universiteit Utrecht Holding B.V., terwijl de Pre Seed Grant van het Netherlands Genomics Initiative de feitelijke oprichting van het bedrijf mogelijk heeft gemaakt.

Cristal Delivery heeft een uniek technologie platform ontwikkeld bestaande uit tijdelijk gestabiliseerde nanodeeltjes, zogenaamd CriPec®. De strategie van het bedrijf is om deze technologie te valoriseren door eigen producten en producten voor farmaceutische partners te ontwikkelen, die de huidige problemen van geneesmiddelblootstelling van met name laagmoleculaire stoffen oplossen. In de afgelopen periode heeft Cristal Delivery veelbelovende preklinische resultaten van haar eerste drie producten verkregen. De toegevoegde waarde is een verhoogd therapeutisch effect door een gecontroleerde en verlengde geneesmiddelafgifte in combinatie met verhoogde opeenhoping in ziek weefsel. De groeiende hoeveelheid informatie bevestigt de hoge potentie en veiligheid van deze eigen nanotechnologie in verschillende ziektebeelden, zowel in huidige als nieuwe indicatiegebieden. Cristal Delivery’s nanodeeltjes hebben een unieke positie binnen het veld van nanomedicijnen aangezien ze de beste eigenschappen van bekende nanodeeltjes in één enkel, op maat gemaakt system combineren.

Cristal Delivery’s nanoparticulate drug delivery platform increases efficacy, safety and convenience of pharmaceutical products through tuneable and controlled drug release inside the body. Cristal Delivery is developing a proprietary product portfolio based on innovative combinations of its technology with new as well as marketed drugs. Moreover, it offers pharmaceutical companies facing the “patent cliff” customised solutions to improve the therapeutic performance of their drug products.

The new company is founded by Dr. Cristianne Rijcken (Chief Executive Officer) and Dr. Joost Holthuis (founder and former CEO of OctoPlus N.V.) and is based in Utrecht. Cristal Delivery is a spin-off of the Department of Pharmaceutics of Utrecht University. The platform is based on the pioneering work of Prof. Wim Hennink and the PhD-work of Cristianne Rijcken. Cristal Delivery has secured seed financing from its founders, a private investor and Universiteit Utrecht Holding B.V., while the Pre Seed Grant of the Netherlands Genomics Initiative was instrumental in establishing the company.

Cristal Delivery has created a unique platform technology of transiently stable nanoparticles, so-called CriPec®. The company’s strategy is to leverage this technology, partially together with partners, into an assorted product portfolio. This generates valuable solutions for current drug delivery issues with low molecular weight compounds and peptides. In recent months, Cristal Delivery has obtained exciting preclinical results of first products based on CriPec®. Beneficial product features include an improved therapeutic index as a result of enhanced tissue targeting and tailored sustained drug release. The growing data package underscores the broad potential and safety of the proprietary technology for a variety of indications, both existing as well as new treatment areas. Cristal Delivery’s  nanoparticles have a unique position in the nanomedicinal field as they combine the best features of known nanoparticles into one single, tuneable system.

Potential candidates should have a background in (analytical) chemistry, pharmacy or (medical) biology and at least 3-5 years experience in industrial pharmaceutical product development, ideally in drug delivery systems. Next, we would like to get into contact with motivated master students with an interest in pharmaceutical product development to do their research projects (at least 6 months).
